Club Band Jazz Band Debate Rossland
Secondary Debate Club Since 1985
Rossland Secondary has had the continued support of students in the Debate
Club. The tradition includes participation locally in the West Kootenay Region
as well as the Okanagan and, yearly, in the provincials held in various
locations around the province. Students have traveled to the nationals at both
the junior and senior categories. Students
participate in three levels according to their age: grade 8 which includes
grades 7 and 8, junior (grades 9, 10) and senior (grade 10, 11, 12). In
addition to being part of a two person team the students contribute to the club
activities and assisting in preparing for tournaments. The activity promotes a
variety of skills including: research, speech writing, public speaking,
analysis, synthesis, judgment, critical thinking and of course, having fun. Each team
must critically look at a proposed resolution from both sides and be able to
discuss the topic and defend it from both positions. This makes the debate process
particularly enjoyable as students who feel strongly about a topic will become
much more open minded about the controversial issues presented. The
tradition of debate at Rossland Secondary has been encouraged by staff,
parents, and the community. Students benefit from the opportunities and support
provided from all those who contribute. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once
said, " One ought everyday at least to hear a little song, read a good poem,
see a fine picture, and if it were possible to speak a few reasonable words. "
Rossland Secondary students have that opportunity. PROGRAMS AND SERVICES The main
purpose of the Library is to support the curriculum by providing additional
